Antiquing in France: How We Source Our Authentic Pieces

At Le Chateau, every piece has a passport. Once a year, our team travels deep into the heart of France. From quiet Provençal towns to storied Parisian markets, to hand-select the antiques you see in our showroom and online.

Join us behind the scenes as we tell you how we source gilded mirrors, Swedish chests, Louis XV armchairs, and more. This is where the magic begins.

Behind the Scenes – What We Look For

We don’t buy from catalogs. Every piece in our showroom has been personally inspected and chosen for its quality and soul.

Our sourcing trips are not just glamorous strolls through French châteaus. They involve early mornings, standing in long lines before sunrise, waiting for the gates to open at a brocante or estate sale.

We sort through hundreds of pieces, sometimes in the rain, dust, or heat — all to find the ones worth bringing home.

We examine each item for:

  • Authenticity (true 18th–19th century origin)
  • Construction details like pegged joints, original paint, or untouched marble
  • Age-earned character — wear in all the right places
  • Unique details you fake: a hand-carved floral motif, a gently faded patina, or charming hardware

The Hunt Begins – Where We Go

France is home to some of the most charming antique markets in the world — and we make it a point to visit them all. From the sprawling Marche aux Puces in Paris to the sun-washed brocantes of L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, we explore every hidden corner for rare pieces with soul, that we know you'll love.

Our go-to stops include:

  • Paris Flea Market at Saint-Ouen
  • Brocantes in Provence & Aix-en-Provence
  • Estate sales in the Loire Valley
  • Private appointments with long-time dealers
